HOUSTON – Companies using Facebook and its fan page module to market themselves can increase sales, word-of-mouth marketing and customer loyalty among some consumers, according to research from Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business.
The research, published in an article called “How Effective is Facebook Marketing?” will be featured in the March issue of the Harvard Business Review. The study was conducted by Utpal Dholakia, a professor at the school of business, and Emily Durham, the founder of Restaurant Connections – a Houston-based restaurant consultancy.
Customers of the Dessert Gallery (DG), a popular Houston-based café chain, were surveyed and prior to the study, DG did not have a Facebook presence. Looking at more than 1,700 respondents over a three-month period, the study found that compared with typical Dessert Gallery customers, those who were Facebook fans made 36 percent more visits to DG stores each month. This group also spent 45 percent of its eating out dollars at DG and 33 percent more at DG stores. Emotionally, 14 percent were more attached to the DG brand and 41 percent had a greater psychological loyalty toward DG.
“We must be cautious in interpreting the study’s results,” says Dholakia. “The fact that only about 5 percent of the firm’s 13,000 customers became Facebook fans within three months indicates that Facebook fan pages may work best as niche marketing programs targeted to customers who regularly use Facebook. Social media marketing must be employed judiciously with other types of marketing programs.” However, the results offer that fan pages can be an effective, low-cost way to engage in social-media marketing.
Facebook is now the second-most visited Web site in the United States, recently surpassing Yahoo! in traffic and garnering more than 133 million hits last month.
